A space for multilingual imagination
In March 2026 we spent a morning at Loyola College, Chennai, with the writer Salma and translator N. Kalyan Raman. Close to ninety students filled the room as we worked through one of Salma's short stories — first in the original Tamil, then through a working draft built sentence by sentence on the board, with the room arguing happily over every other word.
The session ran long, as the best ones do. Salma read her own work aloud, fielded questions about the lives behind the fiction, and stayed back to talk with students over coffee. Two of the translations drafted that morning were later sent to our open submissions desk; one has since been shortlisted for the Hyphen Connects contest.
