Assistant Editor

We are looking for a mid-level Assistant Editor to join our publishing house, with a strong interest in Indian language literatures and literature in translation. Working closely with the Editor, the Assistant Editor will be involved in the editorial development and day-to-day management of books from manuscript to publication.
Key Responsibilities
- Read, assess, and edit manuscripts, including works translated from Indian languages.
- Work closely with authors, translators, freelance editors, proofreaders, designers, and production teams.
- Support the Editor on acquisitions, editorial planning, and development of the publishing list.
- Manage multiple titles simultaneously, tracking schedules, deadlines, manuscripts, proofs, and production stages.
- Ensure that books move smoothly through the editorial and production process and that deadlines are met.
- Proofread text generated for social media and other platforms
- Maintain high standards of editorial quality, accuracy, and consistency.
- Help develop and maintain efficient editorial workflows and systems.
What we're looking for
- 4+ years of experience in publishing, editing, or a related field.
- Strong editorial and proofreading skills and excellent attention to detail.
- A genuine interest in Indian literatures and literary cultures.
- Experience with translated literature is highly desirable.
- Excellent written and spoken English; knowledge of an Indian language is an advantage.
- Strong organisational and project-management skills.
- Ability to work independently, take ownership, and collaborate effectively with authors and colleagues.
