Hyphen Connects

Hyphen Connects takes the work of the desk out to where the next generation of readers and translators already are — onto campuses, into classrooms, across languages. We bring a Hyphen editor and a working translator into a school or college for a half-day session on translation as a craft, moving through one short Indian-language text — usually a short story or a set of poems — first in the original, then through a working draft built live with the room.

It is, more than anything, an invitation to imagine in more than one language at once. Visits are free for the host institution; we ask only for a working room, an audience of curious students, and one teacher willing to keep the conversation going after we leave. Around the campus visits sit a student translation contest, an open submissions desk, and a small but growing shelf of work first drafted by students.
